My work has sought to explore the concept of self by examining auxiliary elements of life such as our immediate surroundings, our past, and language. In particular I find myself drawn to gathering information on these topics and then storing them in abstract containers, such as video. With these containers I seek to create digital and physical reliquaries of this information. During the creation of these reliquaries I find that there is a point of saturation where no more information can be efficiently recorded visually. It is this point as well as the space beyond the point of saturation that intrigues me. The medium of my works range from video, to digital prints and found object sculpture. The media I choose is entirely dependent on its capabilities and relevance to the concept I am exploring.
My project “ In Reference to the Sun” is a video series totaling 24 hours in all. This project heavily references the changes that the world faced beginning in 2020 as a result of COVID-19. Much of the population was forced to reevaluate how they spent their time. It is this new era of time investment that “In Reference to the Sun” seeks to explore. With much of people’s experiences moving to a digital realm, video was the obvious choice for medium. Abstract layered visuals are presented to represent the constant flow of information and stimuli.
By working to abstract information I seek to pull concepts out of context in order to allow them to be viewed outside of the traditional milieu. It is my theory that in the periphery, many great revelations can be made. My work encourages people to adopt a more mindful thought process that serves to foster a more thoughtful, empathetic and aware populace.
